Curiosities Bleigiessen

The German Custom of Bleigiessen
Bleigiessen (pouring molten lead) is a popular German custom on New Year's Eve. A candle is lit, and small chunks of lead are melted in a spoon held over the candle. Because of the low melting temperature of lead, this process doesn't take long. The molten lead is then quickly poured from the spoon into a bowl of cold water, where it hardens almost immediately. Each person tries to determine what he or she 'sees' in the hardened lead figure. Often the lead figure is held up to a candle or other light, and the shape of the shadow it casts aids in important decisions. The shape of the lead determines the future of the person for the year to come. To make sure that you are not frustratedly looking at the strangely shaped piles, we are trying to help you with the interpretation. You can download the file and print it out, hence in the first hour of the new year you will be able to impress your guests by classifying the lead lumps with a knowing look. Anyway you should let yourself be led by your spontaneous feelinging. Sometimes there is something like an intuitive access to the figure, just let it take effect on you. Don't throw them away straigth away, but keep them and have a look at them the next day (maybe with a more sober look ;-) ).

And here some advice, if it is your first time with this art of interpreting the future. You can use every spoon, to hold it over the flame - but not a silver spoon, as they heaten up to slowly. Keep your hand steady until the lead has molten completely. Take a swing and pour it in the small bowl with cold water. The faster you throw it in the water, the less lead sprays off. So you achieve a figure made of one piece.
