How do herbs work?
Herbs contain many valuable substances of all different kinds. Their effect on the human body is depending on the type of ingredients.
Carbohydrate - divided in cellulose (fibre), pectin, starch (in the green parts and roots), fructose, glucose (in ripe fruits)
Protein - especially as valuable enzymes and ferments
Vitamins - (leaves, fruits, berries), vitamin c, a and b, seldom e
Mineral nutrient and trace elements (important for the metabolism)
Plant hormons
Essential oils (bactericidal)
Organic acids (laxative)
Tannic acid (bactricidal, astringend)
Bitter sonstituent (increase of salivation and gastric juices)
Mucus substance (for infections of the skin and of the upper respiratory tract)
Of course this list is not complete, but serves only the purpose of giving an impression of the variety of substances, and therefore to a better understanding of why herbs are essential for your health.
