22.4.2007 Blue Angel jet crashes at S.C. air show. The crash took place in the final minutes of the air show, said Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Walley, a Blue Angel pilot. The pilots were doing a maneuver which involved all six planes joining from behind the crowd to form a Delta triangle, said Lt. Cmdr. Garrett D. Kasper, spokesman for the Blue Angels. One plane did not rejoin the formation. Military officials said the pilot's name would not be released until Sunday afternoon, keeping with a policy of waiting 24 hours after.

16.4.2007 A gunman reponsible for multiple deaths, is currently dead and a second was thought to be be on the loose at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The campus of Virginia Tech is currently the scene of at least two separate shootings. According to university officials, it would appear that around 7:15 authorities got a 911 call of shot fired and multiple injuries at West Ambler Johnston hall early Monday morning. University police as well as the FBI are reportedly on the scene and investigating. The hall houses almost 900 students, mostly freshman. According to reports, at least 33 people have been killed (many of them students) and it would appear there are many injuries.

6.4.2007 A GREEK cruise ship sank off the holiday island of Santorini today, after the vessel struck rocks and nearly 1,600 people on board had to be rescued. The Sea Diamond sank shortly before 5am, 15 hours after the accident occurred and the ship began listing and taking on water. Authorities said two French passengers – a 45 year-old man and his 16-year-old daughter – had still not been accounted for, and lists of rescued passengers were being rechecked. No one was injured in Thursday’s dramatic three-hour rescue effort, which involved Greece’s military, commercial ships and the island’s local fishermen.

4.4.2007 A domestic dispute erupted in gunfire at CNN's headquarters yesterday, killing a woman and critically wounding the man who first pulled a gun, authorities said. The man and woman were arguing near the main entrance of the complex when the man shot her, police officer James Polite said. The armed man was then shot by a CNN security guard. 7.3.2007 An Indonesian passenger jet overshot the runway and burst into flames on Wednesday as it landed in the cultural capital of Yogyakarta, but most of the 140 people on board survived. Dozens of passengers leapt from the national carrier Garuda Airline plane's emergency exits into surrounding rice paddy fields to escape the inferno, which reduced the plane to a smouldering wreck of twisted metal. Twenty-three people, including two Australians, died in the crash.

20.2.2007 Rescuers using an electronic locating device found the three climbers and their black Labrador, Velvet, on Monday morning in the White River Canyon, where they had holed up overnight at about 7,400 feet, officials said. The crew hiked with them down the east flank of the 11,239-foot mountain; on the way down, the climbers got into a tracked snow vehicle that took them to the ambulance. "The dog probably saved their lives" by lying across them during the cold night, said Erik Brom, a member of the Portland Mountain Rescue team. He described the wind in the canyon as "hellacious."

9.2.2007 Anna Nicole Smith has died after collapsing at a Florida hotel. The 39-year-old former Playboy model was rushed to hospital, but could not be revived. The star's lawyer confirmed she had died after being found unresponsive at the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino. Police chief Charlie Tiger said the actress's private nurse, who found her unconscious, had called the hospital operator from her sixth floor room to summon emergency services at 1.38pm. At 1.45pm a bodyguard performed CPR on her, then paramedics battled in vain to resuscitate her.

30.1.2007 Liz Renay, a stripper and cult movie actress whose real life included roles as a gangster's moll, prison inmate, author, artist and Hollywood Boulevard streaker, died Monday from cardiopulmonary arrest and gastric bleeding, the Clark County coroner's office said. 16.1.2007 Italian magistrates were Tuesday probing a collision between a commuter hydrofoil and a container ship off the coast of Sicily that left four crew members dead and 88 passengers injured. According to an initial reconstruction of Monday afternoon's accident, the container ship rammed into the Segesta Jet hydrofoil about one mile and a half off the port of Messina. Magistrates were trying to find out whether the hydrofoil had cut across the ship's path or whether the latter was responsible for the collision.

8.1.2007 WASHINGTON D.C. Twenty people were injured yesterday when a Metro train carrying more than 100 passengers jumped the tracks at the Mount Vernon Square Station in Northwest Washington, said officials. The passenger injury total appeared to be one of the highest in 31 years of subway operation and raised new questions about the system's safety. With little warning, the northbound Green Line train began to shake and bump as the wheels of one of its rear cars left the tracks about 3:45 p.m. Part of one car hit the wall of the tunnel. Shattered glass and chunks of fiberglass tumbled to the floor of at least one car. Lights went out and shouting passengers ran through darkened cars, according to witnesses.

30.12.2006 Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was hanged in the pre-dawn hours today for crimes against humanity in the mass murder of Shiite men and boys in the 1980s. Hussein, 69, was escorted from his U.S. military prison cell at Camp Cropper, near the Baghdad airport, and handed over to Iraqi officials. He was executed on the day that Sunni Muslims, of which Hussein was a member, celebrate the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha. He died before a small group of observers. 25.12.2006 James Brown, the legendary singer known as the "Godfather of Soul", has died in Atlanta. He was 73. Brown was hospitalised on Sunday at Emory Crawford Long Hospital with pneumonia and died around 1.45am yesterday (5.45pm AEDT), said his agent Frank Copsidas, of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side. Brown's family was being notified of his death and the cause was still uncertain, Copsidas said. "We really don't know at this point what he died of." 18.12.2006 DETECTIVES investigating the alleged murders of five prostitutes were today questioning a 37-year-old man. Police said the man was arrested at his home near Felixstowe, Suffolk, shortly before 7.30am. Detective Chief Superintendent Stewart Gull said the man had been arrested on suspicion of the murder of five prostitutes whose bodies had been found near villages south of Ipswich, Suffolk, during the past three weeks. Police refused to name the man. But sources close to the investigation said he was Tom Stephens, of Trimley St Martin, near Felixstowe.

11.12.2006 Gen. Augusto Pinochet, who overthrew Chile's democratically elected Marxist president in a bloody coup in 1973 and ruled for 17 years, died yesterday at the age of 91. 5.12.2006 Fiji's fourth coup in 20 years is now official after the military commander said he had dismissed the prime minister and taken over the role of the president. "As of six o'clock this evening the military has taken over the running of the government and the country," Commander Frank Bainimarama told reporters in Suva. He said he dismissed PM Laisenia Qarase after a weeks-long standoff between the two leaders rooted in tension between the South Pacific nation's indigenous people and its ethnic Indian minority. 3.12.2006 Mudslide-devastated villages in the eastern Philippines buried their dead Sunday as hysterical local officials pleaded for food and water, with the death toll in the tragedy expected to go beyond 1,000. Rescuers continued the grim search for more bodies under the black swathe of volcanic debris, boulders and mud at the foot of Mayon Volcano in Albay province, 330 kilometres south of Manila.
